So, what inspired you to open your business in the town?

I was born and raised in Burton and was inspired by local businessmen such as my father. He introduced me to my first boss at Slynns Traditional Signwriters, in Hunter Street, in Burton, where I started my career in signage as a £25 a week apprentice signwriter.

During my time with Slynns, I assisted on projects for the famous breweries based in our town. Back then we used a mahlstick, a brush and a pot of paint.

My dream was to set up my own company and give back to the local community.

What makes you different?

For me Hardy Signs is more than just a business. With over 35 years of experience in the industry I have built up a wide base of business contacts and I am passionate about supporting the local community.

It is why we invest heavily in our people and offer a variety of apprenticeship opportunities to support the next generation of workers in the industry.

We also continue to invest in environmentally friendly machinery to keep the company evolving and growing with the times.

Where do you see the business going in the next 3 to 5 years?

We have big plans for Hardy Signs over the coming years and are continuing to work to establish Hardy Signs as a leading digital signage supplier in the UK and beyond. This will be achieved through research and effective marketing to existing and new clients. The development of new products such as a range of LCD hand sanitiser units brought to market during the Covid-19 Pandemic is key to this growth. These efforts are showing significant growth, with a notable first project in the USA in 2020.

Closer to home we will also continue to invest in new technologies and workers. The Sign and Print Academy continues to be popular with new apprenticeships taking on fulltime positions and staff continuing to upskill.

Our aim will also be to develop our metal fabrication and manufacturing capabilities to continue to offer the great service and skills inhouse as well as looking at options for new technologies in the signage industry such as 3D printing.

I think the focus for the next few years will certainly be cementing what we have already achieved and helping to create greater efficiencies, reduce waste and push innovation in the industry.

Exciting times ahead.

What is the one thing that you love about being a business owner?

There are many things I love about being a business owner.

Firstly, I love helping develop people and have certainly seen many over the years. Investment to people and machinery have helped Hardy Signs thrive, which is the second thing I love.

Eventually, that has given me the third thing I love as a business owner, a more flexible lifestyle.

Favourite place to visit in Burton?

There are many places I can’t wait to visit again, from watching Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium to playing golf at Branston Golf and Country Club followed by a cold pint and a delicious meal at the iconic restaurant, The Winery.
