With over a decade of experience in hand making bespoke jewellery Jamie Hall Jewellery can design, craft and mend pretty much anything. Passionate about offering a truly personal service Jamie runs the family firm with his wife Helen and they work with gold, silver and platinum to create truly bespoke deigns. Opening their business in Burton in 2015, Burton Small Business talk to the professional goldsmith making one off special pieces of jewellery for everything from weddings to special occasions. Find out about his passion for Anglo-Saxon and medieval metalwork and why jewellery making will always be is in his blood.
I am a goldsmith and jewellery designer, working mainly on bespoke commissions. I work with gold, silver and platinum, and I make my own alloys and hand-make every piece of jewellery. I trained in modern goldsmithing, but my own interest is in traditional techniques, and I am a specialist in Anglo-Saxon and medieval metalwork. I work with each customer to tailor their design, with an initial consultation leading to sketched ideas. We do not have a retail shop but we have a fully-equipped home workshop, and pre-lockdown we would meet with customers in their homes for a chat, but in current circumstances we are able to do the same by Zoom. We like to make things as easy for the customer as possible, so that they don’t have to travel into town for their appointment or collection, and our hours are flexible to work around our customers: this gives us a better work-life balance, and helps our customers to maintain their own balance.
What made you want to set up your business in Burton?
I moved to Burton in 2007, to join my wife and business partner. I had spent the first part of my career working in my parents’ jewellery business in Derby, and we set up our own business in 2015 when our children were small. We wanted to be able to make our own orders at home, to be able to spend as much time as possible with the kids. Until lockdown I was using some facilities in Derby when needed, but lockdown meant that we couldn’t access those premises. We received a business grant which paid for the remaining equipment that we lacked at home, and now we are able to base our business wholly in Burton. Our family are in the area, and we find Burton and Uttoxeter gives us a great customer base, and we also have a lot of customers in the rural areas as we can travel to visit our customers in their own home.
As a jeweller what makes you different?
I am your personal goldsmith. We enjoy that we have a good relationship with our customers, and they call us whenever they need a repair or commission. My family’s business has had customers that have stayed with them for the entire time that they have been operating, passing their custom onto the next generation, and we want to be there for our customers (and their families) for many years to come.
The title “jeweller” covers a variety of different services, but we are manufacturing jewellers. We make everything to order, only making a small amount of stock to demonstrate and sell at events. We can make exactly what you want, rather than you finding the closest approximation in the shops. We also do repairs in-house, so we can do them quicker and cheaper than some of our competitors, who may have to outsource the work. As a goldsmith I can make my own gold alloys, and we take a lot of remodelling jobs where I melt down the customer’s original gold to make a new item. In doing this, it is possible to change the gold carat, for example I could turn a 22ct gold ring into an 18ct piece of jewellery, including changing it to white or rose gold.
What comes next for Jamie Hall Jewellery?
Although we want our business to grow, we don’t plan to have multiple premises and a large amount of staff – we want to be able to continue to give our customers the one-on-one attention they need. We would like to create a larger workshop, with the ability to teach groups. Our business has grown each year, and we aim to continue that growth. At this point, most of our jobs come from repeat customers, and we hope that will continue along with attracting new customers.
Is there one thing you love about being a business owner?
The flexibility to spend time with my family, without a commute and 9-5.
What is your favourite place to visit in Burton?
The Dial – we’ve been going there for years, and can’t wait to return for some cocktails.
