Award winning financial advice from Burton’s Equity Select

Buying a home is one of the biggest financial commitments you could make in your lifetime so when Allan Robertson moved from Scotland three years ago he wanted to create a business which supported homeowners in getting honest, friendly advice.

Allan Robertson of Equity Select offering independent financial advice with a difference in the town

Setting up financial advice service Equity Select, based in Stretton, Burton-on-Trent, he set about offering a mortgage service which puts the customer at the heart of the process.

With appointments at times to suit you, the chance to talk to your own personal adviser that knows your case, and face to face meetings, it is the personal touch which sets the independent mortgage adviser apart from larger national banks.

Find out how Allan plans to grow his offer and why he is a vouchedfor Top Rated Adviser three years in a row as we talk to Burton’s mortgage adviser with a difference celebrating three years in the town.

What is Equity Select?

After moving to Stretton from Edinburgh I set up Equity Select in order to offer client focussed financial advice around mortgages to the local community.

When I purchased my first home here I noticed that there was a lack of customer care when it came to arranging my mortgage. Considering this was most likely going to be the biggest financial commitment in my life, I was amazed at how I was just treated like a number. It was at that point I decided that there would be a more friendly and professional way for First Time Buyers, and those looking to move home, to get the right advice, and feel like they were valued.

Over the last few years the business has grown from strength to strength across the region, with nearly all of our clients coming from recommendations by existing ones! Even through lockdown the phone never stopped ringing with enquiries from clients who had heard about the level of service we offer and were keen for Equity Select to help them with their home buying journey. To the point the business has had to bring in members of staff to help with the day to day operations. This gives me more time to visit clients and offer the 5 star service Equity Select has become known for.

In the last 18 months there has also been a surge in enquiries for those over the age of 55 looking to find out more about what options are available to them. Whether it’s been a new mortgage to help them buy a home for them to retire in, or if they already have a home, looking to find a way to release some of the equity in the property to help fund a more fulfilling retirement. There are only a handful of equity release advisers in the area and with it being such an important decision I can clearly see this side of the business growing over the coming years.

So, what makes Equity Select so different?
The biggest difference tends to be that we like to work face to face.  Even during a pandemic we continued to offer this service. For most people, sitting down face to face and having a conversation is of more value than a phone call with someone who they may never have met before. Whilst I appreciate that the bigger companies who work on a volume model cannot always offer this service, for me it is one of the most important USP’s of the business.  It was one of the main reasons I set the business up. We do work with a smaller number of clients in comparison to the bigger firms and are more than happy with this. Offering a client focussed service has enabled me to build a strong business foundation and is why we receive regular enquiries from clients across the region.

One of the other issues I found when first buying a home here was the lack of flexibility within the sector. Most people only wanted to work with you during office hours. For that reason Equity Select offer appointments on a day and at a time that works best for our clients. Whether it’s early morning before work, during the working day, after they get home from the office, or, if they are really pushed for time, we can arrange weekend appointments. Again, this makes us more unique.

So, what have you got planned next for Equity Select?
The plan is to expand the reach of the business further across the Midlands into Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and the rest of Staffordshire. Still offering the same level of service but across a wider area.

What is the one thing you love about being a business owner?
Being able to help clients and making them feel special. Financial services may not be the most exciting subject for most people.  Let’s be honest, people want a home not a mortgage! However, the excited feeling you get when the mortgage offer comes through and you get to tell the client the good news never goes away.

Moving from Edinburgh what is the best thing about Burton and your favourite place to visit in the town?

For me it has to be the Honeypot Tea Rooms in Rosliston. It is the best place to get a Scottish breakfast!
