Florist’s eco-friendly focus sees launch of floral specialist in rural Burton

Recognised for her wedding flowers, Hayley has been a florist for over 16 years, having worked in a number of  retail florist shops and a 4* hotel, providing beautiful flowers for every occasion. When she moved to the area eight years ago, she dreamed of one day opening her own florist and gift store.
Passionate about supporting local businesses and the environment, Hayley is actively working on reducing the use of ‘single use’ plastics and floral foam , applying more eco friendly design techniques to her work.

Find out what made florist Hayley Evans set up Blossom Branch at Craythorne Courtyard in July 2020 – in the middle of a national lockdown – offering unique flower displays for businesses, homeowners, weddings and gifts.

What is Blossom Branch?

Blossom Branch is a florist shop in Burton, providing designs for all occasions, using only the finest flowers and foliage.

I create wedding flowers for couples across Derbyshire and Staffordshire and use flowers and foliages from Dutch auctions and British growers where possible.

It’s always an honour to be asked to create bespoke funeral tributes for loved ones, ranging from casket sprays, wreaths, sheaves to special request pieces including letters and various shapes.

Creating beautiful gift bouquets is something I love doing. They are available for local delivery and collection, for all occasions.

I host flower workshops throughout the year, creating seasonal wreaths, and other floral designs, participants can take their creations home to enjoy. On these workshops, I offer tuition, advice, refreshments (often created by local bakers)

A lovely experience to enjoy together with friends and family.

I can also provide flowers for businesses, to display in the workplace and decorate venues to give the wow factor.

What do you think makes your business so special?

I pride myself on great customer service and everything is created with love.

My shop is based in a charming farm courtyard, with other great independent small businesses. The setting is beautiful and rural, with easy access to nearby Stretton and Rolleston by car and by foot. A popular spot with cyclists too.

A real local gem, offering a unique shopping experience. I like to team up with other local businesses on projects where possible and sell special handmade gifts and cards as well.

I am committed to applying more eco- friendly design techniques in my work, e.g wrapping materials, using less plastic and using less floral foam, for example,  trying to do my bit to help the environment.

Do you have any special or unique products in your store?

On Fridays, I like to do a Friday flowers/Lockdown bunch promotion, a specific flower bunch, changing weekly, the best the market has to offer that week. It is popular with customers who would like to treat themselves (or others) to flowers for the weekend.

To make floral gifts extra special, I also offer add on purchases, which are made in the UK, most of them locally. These include:

-Greeting Cards (Exclusive Blossom design to my shop only) created in Repton

-Luxury wooden wick candles (which crackle when lit) made in Staffordshire

– Chocolate Box Option

– Wildflower seedballs – BeeBombs, from Dorset – bee friendly/helping environment

When the shop is open as well, I also have a small amount of items displayed in the shop such as pretty clay earrings, or ceramic plant signs, hand crafted by other small business owners.

Have you ever received any awards for your work?

I was recognised as a regional finalist at The Wedding Industry Awards in 2017 and 2018. These awards are based on great client feedback from wedding work, for which I am very proud of.

What are your aspirations for the future?

I aim to continue to grow my business and become well known locally, in the Stretton and Rolleston areas in particular. I also look forward to working on weddings and being able to host workshops in the future, as these have been on hold due to COVID-19.

I’m also looking forward to working on new design techniques to move my business forward, keeping the business fresh and interesting, focussing on eco- friendly methods.

What is the one thing that you love about being a business owner?

Being in control of decision making and the running of the business, doing what I love.

Do you have a favourite place to visit in Burton?

Stapenhill Gardens and the Washlands. My husband and I enjoy walking here with our dog, Jack. It is great to have such beautiful nature walks in Burton.
