Two award-winning Burton businesses have been announced as the final headline sponsors of our Burton Small Business conference, which takes place at the Pirelli Stadium on September 12.
Branding and marketing agency Davies + Scothorn and town centre wellbeing studio Calm join Burton & District Chamber of Commerce and the Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Growth Hub to make this third annual conference the biggest and best yet.
The event will include nine presentations on subjects including funding for business, legal issues, collaborative working to win bigger contracts, more effective networking and the future of technology. There will also be a dozen stands by business support organisations that can help companies and entrepreneurs to grow and flourish. There will be lots of opportunities to network and meet new connections and the morning will end with a buffet lunch where delegates can meet the day’s speakers who are all experts in their own fields.
Gavin Scothorn, of Davies + Scothorn, was one of the speakers at the 2017 conference, which was held at the Visitor’s Centre, Marston’s Brewery. He and business partner Blair Davies enjoyed the event so much that they were keen to support this year’s conference.
Blair explained: “We help businesses and brands to scale and grow, so it seemed a perfect fit for us to support a conference that is all about doing just that for businesses and enterprises in and around our home town.”
Davies + Scothorn were honoured at this year’s Staffordshire Chamber Awards and have worked with clients including the Brownlee Brothers, Jenson Button, Shell, Hyundai, Gibson Technology, Hardy Signs and the Trent & Dove Housing Association.
Calm opened last year in a historic well house, close to Burton Library, which the business sympathetically and lovingly restored and converted to create a two-storey studio which offers yoga, pilates and mindfulness classes and workshops. The business won the inaugural Burton People’s Business Award in 2017 after receiving lavish praise from its customers. Judges also recognised the challenges the business overcame after opening just as St Peter’s Bridge closed for essential roadworks drastically reducing the number of people coming into the town centre.
Vanessa Davies of Calm will be speaking at the conference. She said: “I’m going to be talking about overcoming fear and embracing change and I hope my story will inspire others to follow their dreams too. I am delighted that Calm is one of the four headline sponsors for this year’s conference and looking forward to what I’m sure will be a great event.”
The conference is organised by Burton Small Business, a group of Burton-based businesses who first came together in 2014 to organise occasional events to support and celebrate the local business community. As well as two previous conferences, they have organised high-profile events for Small Business Saturday, which have achieved national media coverage, and business networking events in partnership with Marston’s Brewery.
Founder member Elaine Pritchard said: “We have sold out our two previous Burton Small Business conferences at smaller venues, so we are delighted that thanks to our four fantastic headline sponsors we can welcome more delegates than ever this year and include an exhibition of support stands for the first time.
“We aim to show that Burton is always open for business and we want to celebrate the quality, diversity and expertise of Burton’s business community with talks and information that will inspire them to grow and become even more successful. We are also very grateful to Davies + Scothorn for designing and producing a new flyer promoting the conference that we’ll be delivering to local businesses in the coming weeks.”
Tickets costing £20 including lunch and a delegate pack can be booked online at burtonsmallbizconference.eventbrite.co.uk
