British Sign Language interpreter Sarah Gatford was one of the speakers at the Burton Small Business free conference in 2017.
Now she is asking local businesses to sign up to a 1% pledge to improve accessibility. She has been inspired by the way the British cycling team turned around its fortunes through the ‘aggregation of marginal gains’. Derbyshire-born cycling coach Sir David Brailsford championed the idea that if you improved every area related to cycling by just 1%, those small gains would add up to remarkable improvement.
Sarah said: “Every small business can do something to open up access, such as adding subtitles to a promotional video, or making a number available that customers can text instead of only being able to call.
“You might think, ‘Why should I? I don’t have any customers who are deaf or hard of hearing’. Well, maybe there’s a reason for that and by making small tweaks you could open up new opportunities for your business.”
